FINAL PROJECT PROPOSAL

My concept for grad school is loosely based on ideas of seduction and temptation.  More specifically, it deals with the lures of addiction through visual stimulus or "triggers."  The paintings that I have been making recall the workings of microscopic photography about disease, which I have made to tie to addiction.  I am linking addiction to disease and using the microscopic imagery as my source for context to present the viewer.

I would like to continue to work with the projections of the organic forms from my paintings and also incorporate actual live footage of the process of making the paintings.  In between shots I would like to add flashing imagery in between of people trying to tempt the viewer either sexually (licking lips and winking, etc), offering candy,  eating indulgent foods, and through the use of drugs, cigarettes or drinking.

I think the overall feel of the picture to seem a little disconnected, stream of conscious, and even a little jerky.  I would like the picture to seem surreal, reminiscent of some of the Maya Derrin and Salvador Dali work early in the 20th century.  I think the imagery would be somewhat dark, yet humorous, like something that you might see in the works of John Waters.

  1. I'm not sure if I can say anything that hasn't been said in class. I believe you should drop the whole disease theme and stick with seduction and temptation. You could combine the things that seduce humans; cigarettes, food, sex etc. Find the attributes that cause this inanimate things to become addictive. Addiction could be for anything. I mean there's a girl who's addicted to eating laundry cleaner sheets. You should watch that show called "Strange Addictions" I think. Tighten up the idea and add more layers! You need to create connections that the viewer can pick up on. Maybe narrow it down then expand, like the sexual seduction of food.

    1. thanks. I think I would be fine with just discussing the temptations and putting silly stuff in there. But, I think what Jill was saying is that there needs to be some sort of message in the juxtaposition of seduction (visual triggers) and disease.

  2. I agree, you need to narrow your focus. While a piece can have a variety of meanings to different people, the way you discussed it in class felt a bit scattered. I think if you find what YOU want to say and stick with that, the other aspects of the work are going to follow suite.

  3. The idea of seduction is great. I love the imagery of people popping up in between these organic and stimulating images to just wink or lick a lollipop sensually. It kind of gives the entire idea this subliminal message feel. I think that ties in real nicely with the surrealism you're looking for. But yeah, just like what was said in class, you should have a definite stance on what you're trying to say. Like Jill said to me, you don't HAVE to add all this meaning behind a piece but if that's what you're AIMING for then you have to know exactly what you're saying so that you can efficiently get your statement across.

  4. I agree with dropping the whole idea about disease and to focus more on the seduction and temptation theme. It can still relate to many people in different ways and you can lead your views more so that they wont be confused as to what it is your piece is suppose to do.

  5. Everyone's basically said it all. I agree with what was said in class that your initial idea of linking addiction to disease is something that we all already know. Stick with the seduction idea and develop that more.

  6. I think seduction/temptation is the disease. Which was said in class as the understood. I think these videos or the paintings may be an exercise in triggering this disease. Much like what scientists do with things in petri dishes. They poke at in and prod at it in order to better understand it. Then as this scientist specializes in this sort of reaction the next generation of scientists start at a general exercise and then they themselves specialize in certain reactions. Eventually creating a tree of people researching certain aspects/or all of the aspects of triggering human seduction/desire. Maybe they'll fix us so we can still enjoy sexuality without thinking about sex all the time or something so we'll be more productive or have less sexual predators or something. Anywho, you're an American hero for doing the initial phases of research of this soon to be entire-field-of-scientific-study of humans and the disease that took over the 21st century, temptation. Oh yeah, fast editing is cool too; and bright colors.

  7. Maybe you could also focus on the bittersweetness of the disease. Or the biter sweetness of seduction. Or both. Like have these gorgeous looking lips turn all old and cracked. I think that this piece will get your message across if the viewers are grossed out by how the visuals are and then also turned on aesthetically by temptations like food, people, or things. The thought of subliminal messages are irksome to most so I think you'll get a great reaction from the viewers of this piece.

  8. I still like the idea of juxtaposing food as a trigger / temptation with drug addiction. And To include your paintings, you could paint a blurry abstract interpretation of the food as a transition to drugs and disease.
